⚡ TLDR: As a host, verify the renter’s ID and driving license by checking that their name and photos match their profile, the documents are valid, and the license type matches the rented vehicle. Do not store copies of the documents without explicit consent and report any discrepancies or suspicions of fraud to Otto customer support immediately.


How to verify a renters ID and Driving License?



To ensure the safety of our community and the vehicles shared on our platform, Otto requires all renters to verify their ID using Smile Identity, which is verified before they can request a booking. To learn more about our safety process, please read here.


As a host you will be provided with a copy of the driver’s license before a trip for verification purposes. To verify the renters documents at pickup and drop-off please follow the process below:


🆔 Check the ID 

  • Verify that the name on the ID matches the name on the renters trip details.
  • Ensure that the photo on the ID clearly resembles the renter. 
  • Check the expiry date on the ID is valid and does not expire within the trip duration

Note: The ID can be a passport, national ID card, or any other government-issued photo ID.


🔎 Verify the Driving License

  • Confirm the name on the driving license matches the renter's ID and profile.
  • Ensure the photo on the drivers license matches the renter's appearance.
  • Check the expiry date and ensure the driving license is valid and not expired.
  • Verify that the renters minimum age and driving experience meet the requirements of your insurance
  • Ensure the license type matches the vehicle being rented (e.g., a standard car license for a sedan, SUV, etc.)

Note: For international renters, ensure they have an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their original driving license, if required in your country.


🔐 Respect Privacy

  • While verifying the ID and driving license, do not keep copies of their documents unless you have explicit consent from the renter. Any storage without consent violates Otto’s privacy policy


🚩 Report Any Discrepancies

  • If you find any discrepancies or suspect a fraudulent document, DO NOT proceed with the rental. Report this immediately to Otto customer support. See customer support instructions at the bottom of the article! 
  • In your report please provide all the details of discrepancies or suspicious and fraudulent documentation.
